Purpose of Initiative: The purpose of the Livable & Sustainable
Communities Initiative is to develop objective research and initiate sound
public policies that will assure the livability, sustainability and economic
vitality of Valley communities.
Mission: “To provide leadership for the creation of economically viable
and sustainable communities, resulting in an improved quality of life for all
residents”.
Co-Chairs: Bob Scott, CivicCenter Group & Bob Rodine, Polaris Group
Staff: Karen Pearson, Director of Investor Relations
Top Priorities: Insure the successful implementation of Vision2020. Grow
the Alliance’s capacity for generating and disseminating Valley data,
information and demographics. Produce special programs and topical information
publications.
Primary Goals:
1. Generate Data and Produce Periodic Information Reports
• Conduct periodic “Public Opinion Survey” and publish
results
• Coordinate with California State University
Northridge in the production of updated annual Valley
statistical data and information
• Monitor successful implementation of San Fernando
Valley Statistical District
• Publish the Community Indicators Report for the San
Fernando Valley
• Update and maintain content at the Valley Virtual
Library Website
• Assist the Mulholland Institute with special Projects
and Reports
2. Coordinate Events and Programs to Focus Attention on Valley Region
• Monthly “public policy roundtables” through Livable
Communities Council
• Initiate creation of Valley Planning Sub-region with
Southern California Association of
Governments, and explore formation of a
Valley Council of Governments
• Coordinate with the Prosperity2020 Report and Project
Workgroup
• Partner with the “Transportation Strike Force” for
effective solutions to transit problems
• Coordinate with AIA–San Fernando Valley Chapter on
Panorama City and Sun Valley “community
re-engineering” projects
3. Promote Implementation of Vision2020 Priority Strategies
• Workforce Development and Education Improvement
• Land Use, Town Centers (Urban Villages) and Housing
• Transportation and Infrastructure
• Governance Organization and Neighborhood Associations
• Environment, Open Spaces and Conservation
• Architecture, Arts and Culture
