TRANSPORTATION STRIKE FORCE REPORTS ON PROGRESS
On February 27, at the Board of Directors meeting held at the Universal Sheraton, the Transportation Strike Force reported on its progress in speeding up current Valley transit projects: It helped shave two years off the installation of 665 signal synchronizations that will significantly improve traffic flow at more than one thousand intersections; pushed for completion of the I-5 HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) Lane Project by 2007, five years ahead of what was projected; and has worked on ensuring that construction begins on the east-west bus way along Chandler Boulevard. It will also continue work on retaining the $800 million allocated for Valley transit projects.
The Transportation Strike Force, formed in early 2001, is composed of a broad-base group of Valley leaders who advocate on behalf of transportation projects already identified, agreed upon and have funding available. It developed from the Economic Alliance's Transportation Accountability Summit held in the fall of 2000. The Strike Force has targeted 24 transportation projects. Its purpose is to speed the completion of those projects.
